Corporal punishment was a big part of my formative years, the cane at school and the strap or switch at home. Many's the time I went to bed sobbing, with my bottom red raw and throbbing after being thrashed with a whippy switch by my strict Mum, the buds left on to maximise the pain inflicted. I can still hear the swish of that awful instrument, or the explosive crack that the strap caused after fifty years.
